Community
Our Mission
The Enterprising Moms empowers women who are growing businesses while growing families by providing community of support, collaboration, inspiration, education and celebration. We also contribute to the greater good through ongoing volunteer and environmental efforts and activities.
We share trials and triumphs, ideas and resources, and provide support and encouragement to each other as we grow our businesses and our families. We also join forces for group volunteer activities through out the year and encourage and promote eco-active ways of living and doing business.
Founded with just a handful of women meeting monthly for coffee in the DC Metro area, The Enterprising Moms, it has blossomed into a vibrant, multidimensional community made up of self-employed, business-owner and entrepreneurial moms with businesses representing a broad spectrum of industries. We've got consultants, photographers, writers, designers, therapists, chefs and bakers, educators, doctors -- just to name a few.
We're about the whole mom ... our business, our families and everything that fuses the two worlds.
Our community is evolving and will offer many new resources and tools to support and empower moms who are launching and growing their own businesses, or are considering doing so. To stay up-to-date on current events, happenings and offerings, subscribe to our Enteprising Updates.
Founder
TEM was founded by Carolyn Semedo, a work-life integration coach and owner of Apply Within, LLC. In 2005, while pregnant with her third child and launching her coaching business, Carolyn struggled with the many challenges that came with growing a young family (expecting with two children, then ages two and four) and a new business at the same time...
A transplant from the Boston area almost a decade prior with no local family support, Carolyn began training as a life coach as her job in the non-profit sector was phased out. She completed coaching certification and struggled to launch her coaching business. So, she sent a message to a few local moms groups to see if there were others facing similar circumstances and was surprised that there was not existing community to support them. So, she created one.
She first scheduled monthly coffee where these moms could connect and share challenges and successes. The community grew slowly, but steady over time. Soon after the monthly coffees were launched, an online discussion group was formed and the group formed a core base. After Carolyn gave birth to her son and integrated new challenges into her business-owner/mom role this new community became even more important.
Once the youngest grew into his skin a bit and fell into a routine, Carolyn's attention focused more sharply on The Enterprising Moms. The community became a key part of her support system and she wanted share the wealth. New efforts were initiated to spread the word about the group. Soon moms from around the DC metro area and around the country joined in and the group has continued to grow and thrive.
